Personal insight
When my co-founder and I established Zeitgeist Zentrum, we weren’t interested in simply another language school. As a polyglot and late diagnosed female autist (Phuong), who has struggled with rigid teaching methods, I know firsthand that learning a new language is deeply personal. For neurodivergent learners, particularly those with AuDHD (Autism and ADHD), traditional classrooms can feel like a labyrinth of overwhelming expectations and sensory overload.
We don’t follow the normative way of thinking. We don’t think that your brain is broken; it simply works in a different, often brilliant, way. The goal isn’t to force your mind into a rigid box, but to find a strategy that suits you and your needs to learn a language.
Why Traditional Language Schools Miss the Mark
For many, language learning is a linear process: grammar, vocabulary lists, and rote memorization. But for an AuDHD brain, this can be incredibly challenging. The environment itself—noisy rooms, bright lights, or a sense of pressure—can make it nearly impossible to focus. We’ve heard countless stories from students who felt they were failing when the environment was actually failing them.
At Zeitgeist Zentrum, we reject the one-size-fits-all model. We have intentionally built our school from the ground up to be a safe, low-pressure space where your unique brain can thrive.
Our Inclusive Approach to Language Learning
Our philosophy is built on empathy. So, what does this look like in practice? We focus on creating an environment that adapts to you, not the other way around.
Small Class Sizes: Our groups are small by design. This means fewer people, less background noise, and more space to focus. It allows our teachers to give you the individual attention you need and to adapt the lesson to your pace.
Beyond the Textbook: Yes, we use textbooks as a guide, but we bring the language to life. Our curriculum uses creative and playful methods to engage different parts of your brain. We incorporate storytelling, movement, and real-world scenarios that make learning dynamic and stickier than a simple vocabulary list ever could.
A Place to Feel Seen: We understand that some days are harder than others. You won't be judged for needing to take a moment, get a snack, or simply exist without the pressure to perform. This is a place where you can be yourself—and in a language learning context, that’s where you can increase your learning curve.
A Cozy Space: The distinctive feature of our school: our rooms are designed to feel like a cozy home, not an institution. You'll find quiet corners, warm lighting, and plenty of places to feel comfortable. Oh, and our two resident cats, Stevie and Tila, are often around to offer a calming presence.
A Word to the AuDHD Learner
If you’re reading this and feeling like you’ve been through a similar struggle as me (fighting rigid teaching methods, overwhelming and discomforting spaces to calm my nervous system and see progress in my language learning process), know that you’re not alone. The way you learn is valid, and finding a community that understands and support that is the first step toward success — and a lot of fun, too!
Here at Zeitgeist, we will help you not only learn a language, but also find a community where you can relax and achieve personal learning success.
